How to write your own film business plan

Why do I need a film business plan?

Any independent filmmaker trying to raise money for his or her feature film or short film has got to be able to convince film investors to fork over their hard-earned cash and put it into the film's budget. It's no easy task. Especially in today's film investing climate.

Private film investors want to make sure, now more than ever, that the film they're being asked to invest in is worth doing, and will make its money back. Not only that, but that the filmmaker and the film team that's planning on making the film has a solid, well-written plan to make the investor's money back.

That film business plan is the only thing you between you the money from a private film investor. If your film business plan is unprofessional looking, or poorly written, or doesn't contain the specifics on how the film investor will make her money back, you're simply not going to get money for your film. Period.

Can't I just write my own film business plan?

Absolutely! Anyone can write a film business plan from scratch. It's not impossible. And it's not even that difficult. All you need is a word processor and the knowledge of how to put together a film business plan, which you could get by reading one of the many good books on film business plans that are out there. And then there's, of course, your time.

I'm going to be frank with you. I'm trying to make money by selling you my film business plan. No doubt about it. But here's the deal: I had to create all this stuff from SCRATCH. I KNOW how long it takes to put together an awesome film business plan, and it's not fun. If I'd had the chance to just BUY this template off of the internet a few years ago, rather than having to waste weeks of my own time putting it together, you bet I would've! That's why I started selling this. Because I KNOW there are other filmmakers out there like me, who are frustrated with the amount of time we spend putting MINDLESS effort into things like the film's business plan when we could be out there raising money for our films and getting them made. And I KNOW this package is a great deal at a great price that filmmakers like you and I can ACTUALLY AFFORD.

If you're a film director, you've already got countless hats you've got to wear when preparing to make a film. You've got to scout locations, cast and rehearse the actors, do the storyboards, do the animatics, plan out your shots, make sure the producers are hiring good crew, or maybe you're even hiring the crew yourself.

As a producer, you're putting together the team, hammering out cast availabilities, the film's shooting schedule, breaking it down, hiring crew, writing out a budget, getting the initial paperwork done for SAG, WGA, DGA and/or other unions, figuring out where you're going to shoot this thing, what states offer the best tax incentives, and dealing with TONS of other problems that need to be taken care of before the film can start raising money.

So if you feel like finding time in your busy schedule to set aside the 20-40 hours it takes most people to put together an awesome movie business plan, more power to you! But just a heads up, you have to not only write everything from scratch, including bios for your key players, such as cast, crew, and directors and producers, but you've got to put together a section that educates the investor who may be new to filmmaking and doesn't know about how it all works. Your independent film business plan's got to have a step-by-step walkthrough on how a film gets made, finished, brought to market, and sold. Or one of those awesome "angel" film investors who knows nothing about filmmaking that you were hoping to put money in your film will take one look at your business plan and run for the hills.

You can read my brief overview on how to write a film business plan on your own. Or just keep reading to save yourself a bunch of time and headache.

Put simply, if you don't write a good film business plan, chances are, you WILL NOT be able to make your movie, because NO ONE WILL INVEST IN IT.

Your film business plan has to be able tell the film investors what happens along every step of the way. From when they write the first check, to pre-production, to shooting the film on location, to wrapping the film, to shepherding the film through post-production until it's finished, through the festival and market circuit, through the sale of the film and distribution. And all of the myriad details about all of those, including all the different flavors of distribution you're planning to land. Theatrical, cable, video-on-demand, DVD, foreign, domestic... You've got to be prepared to write a business plan that teaches an investor who's new to the film industry how EVERYTHING WORKS, or you don't stand a chance of landing that investor. After all, if you can't tell an investor what his money's going into, when it's needed, why it's needed, and how his money's going to come back, why should he invest in your film? What's the sense in that?

So let's say you're down with that. You're down with basically writing a multi-page primer on how the film industry works, from script to sale. Well, you're still not done.

Because then you've STILL got to get into the details of the financials. An investor is going to want to know what you think your film's chances of making money back, in high, medium, and low sales scenarios. Got 10+ extra hours in your week to create those from scratch? Or would you rather just punch in your film's details, your investment details, and start raising money today?

On top of all THAT, NOW ADD in all the time you're gonna WASTE typing up the tons of OTHER NECESSARY FILM DOCUMENTS to get a film funded and off the ground...

Because once you've got your business plan, including all the financial details, you STILL need to draw up film investor documents, deal memos, private placement memorandums, crew deals, cast deals, transfer of ownership of the script from the writer to the production, and all sorts of legal documents. But we've got you covered. Because we GIVE YOU ALL THAT AS WELL IN OUR PACKAGE. Crew deal memo, cast deal memo, letter of intent template, the list just goes on and on. See our home page for a full list of everything you get FREE in the same single download when you buy my film business plan template.

YES! YOU CAN DO ALL THIS BY YOURSELF FROM SCRATCH! But wouldn't you rather be spending your valuable time placing a finished business plan into the hands of as many potential investors as possible?

It's really all about how much time you want to THROW AWAY doing MINDLESS PAPERWORK and swimming through RED TAPE versus using a film business plan WHICH HAS BEEN PROVEN TO WORK and ACTUALLY RAISING MONEY for your film and GETTING YOUR FILM MADE.

If you'd rather throw away your precious time and talent and creative energy writing up your own film business plan from scratch, which may or may not be as effective as mine, go for it! You can do it on your own, NO DOUBT.

But if you'd rather just pop open a Word document, globally replace your information, paste in the details of your film, and get out there raising money for your film, then you need to stop reading and download our Film Business Template right now.

Does it really make sense for a filmmaker, who's spent many years honing his or her filmmaking craft creatively, to have to spend hours, days, or weeks writing their own film business plan from scratch, or doing any such mind-numbing office work, when they could be out raising money for their film, meeting with investors, actors, producers, and doing what they do best, which is to MAKE FILMS?

Just download the file, open it in Microsoft Word, and replace all the RED TEXT with your own custom text, such as your film name and film company name, as well as details about your film and film team.

As I said on the main page, the business plan is over 80 pages of mindblowingly professional film business plan, including all the film investment documents and film production documents you'll need. Totally easy to customize and completely easy to use. All included in the same quick download. And it's a single Word document, so you already know how to use it! All for just $59.97.
